Cheshire Archives

Cheshire Archives and Local Studies collects, protects and promotes interest in and the use of records and printed material relating to the historic county of Cheshire.

We are a shared service providing archive and records management services to both Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East Councils.

The service collects and preserves historical records and the local studies collection relating to both the ancient and modern county of Cheshire, the diocese and the city of Chester. It makes the records available for study free of charge. Our research service can assist members of the public who are unable to visit the office. We also seek to promote awareness and interest in archives and local studies by participating in events and giving talks on a variety of topics.

Local Studies

Whether you are tracing the history of your family, doing research for a project, tracking down the history of your house or just interested in the local history of the area where you live, you can find useful information in our local studies collections.

The main collection of books and pamphlets, maps, trade directories, journals, local newspapers and other sources for local history research is to be found at the Cheshire Record Office.
