Charles Blackburn is a self-taught, intuitive painter from Memphis, Tennessee, who works with a combination of acrylics, house paint, spray paint, and various means of distressing the painted surface that he doesn’t willingly divulge. His “canvas” is rarely canvas, but often framed-out plywood panels, doors, door panels, vintage furniture, and even detached table tops. His abstract expressionist style was not developed in art school or even with the knowledge of such a thing as “abstract expressionism.” Blackburn’s kinetic technique and boundless energy and enthusiasm for his art can hardly be contained on the surfaces he covers (and repeatedly recovers), nor can it be entirely contained under the classification of paintings…at times almost a two-dimensional form of sculpture.
