All the pictures in this flickr album are real snapshots I ( I = my avatar "Chara Oh" ) took during my exploration in Second Life virtual community.

 

Coming from a design and computing background, been influenced by contemporary artist like Bill Viola and Jeff Wall, directors like Michelangelo Antonioni and Jean-Luc Godard, fashion photographers like Wolfgang Tillmans and Juergen Teller, I am interested in how new mediums of media art and films taking the roles to express social issues. I started Second Life on April 28, 2007. From the first moment I entered in, I decided that I want to documenting everything I see in Second Life. The most interesting phenomenon exists in this first person virtual environment is the notion of "self-identity". Since we can be whoever we want to be, do whatever we want to do, the boundary of real "ME" became vague. However from an other point of view, "ME" became so distinct due to the complete virtual freedom. Then, where does true reality exist?

 

For French philospher Rene Descartes, consciousness and being were proof of each other and relationship between evidence and proof, based on deductive reasoning, subsquently developed into the rational theoretical methods upon which modern Western philosophy and science are grounded. On one level SEEING IS BELIEVING, but on another we know that our perception is a steady process of accretion of konwledge and the interpretation of information. The eye is never innocent.

 

I believe Second Life can be a potential place for me to seek a resolution of a range of social, philosophical problems and related aesthetic issues.
