I'm a career biologist with a background in both environmental and medical sciences. In retirement, I have turned my attention to my lifelong interests in natural history, the Great Lakes, botany, geology, and biological evolution. My photos also reflect my enthusiasm for winter sports and boating, especially canoeing. Karen, my wife is also represented in here, with her interests in architecture and quilting.
Photography has been a lifelong and serious hobby for me since the 4th grade. My best friend at the time had a much older brother, who gave us a box of darkroom equipment, complete with a film tank, contact printer, and all the trays and chemicals. He also gave us a folding camera and several rolls of Kodak 620 film. We were able to follow instructions and produced black and white contact prints that just blew us away. Orders of magnitude better than what our parents were getting with their instamatics, they were sharp with rich tones and deep blacks on the glossy paper. From that point on, I was a serious photographer and have owned and used many different cameras over the years. For a long period, I shot mainly stereo slides, using a Stereo Realist (with super sharp Kodak Ektar 36mm f2.8 lenses) and I am fortunate to have a vast collection of stereo slides of our family and our travels. That ended with the demise of Kodachrome, but luckily those old K25 and K64 slides maintain their color incredibly well when stored in the dark. Maybe there will be a digital stereo comeback, now possible with the advent of better high resolution VR headsets. I hope so.
I hope you find my photos interesting, and that they inspire some intellectual curiosity. Lifelong learning, what a concept!
