Woodhouse Archive
Drag to set position!
Welcome to the Woodhouse Archive, a collection of photographs taken in the 1890’s and early 1900’s by former Nicholson Museum curator, William J Woodhouse. Belonging to the Nicholson Collection at the Chau Chak Wing Museum, a selection of these photographs feature in the new Impressions of Greece exhibition, which explores the relationship between these historic photographs, Greek culture and heritage, and objects in the museum collection.
These photographs show the fascination and emotional connection that Woodhouse had with Greece. He travelled by foot and on horseback, over mountain ranges and by sea, all while carrying the heavy glass plates and camera he captured his images on. The result is over 1500 photographs that portray the beauty of the landscape, the richness of the archaeological sites, and the everyday life of contemporary Greek people. They also tell the story of Woodhouse’s personal impression of Greece as an outsider, highlighting the differences, fondness, and anxieties he had for a culture on the brink of industrialisation and its social impacts.
Around 300 additional photographs were taken in and around Sydney, Australia, giving us an insight into Woodhouse’s family and home life.
Many of these images are still needing to be identified. We are asking you to contribute to our documentation of this collection and assist us with the identification of places and monuments. Participating is simple: leave a comment identifying an image by place name or geographic co-ordinates of where you think the image was taken or describe what you see in the image for our cataloguing project. All Flickr contributors will be acknowledged in the records of the Museum and will greatly help with their ongoing relevance for University students, archaeologists, modern historians, Greek-Australian diaspora and wider communities.
