Excerpt from The Cactus County Enquirer: "Although Gary Smith only began painting in 2009 his work, which he himself describes as 'outsider art', has garnered much praise throughout the county. Inspired by the outsider and folk art tradition, Smith's focus is on creating pieces that express an atheist Dia de los Muertos (the Mexican Day of the Dead festival) as it would be celebrated in the fictional, Epicurean utopia of Cactus County, New Mexico. "As an atheist I'm unhappy using religious imagery in my work so substitute it with themes of a scientific nature." says Smith. "But there's something very warm, very emotional about the home made shrines people create in their homes for the festival. It's art that comes straight from the heart, without pretention, almost unconsciously. I'm trying to capture something of that in my work. I only hope I'm getting close to it." Well, this is one art critic who thinks he is getting close to his ambition, so much so that I have a number of Smiths pieces hanging in my own home!" Charles Monroe, Art Critic for The Cactus County Enquirer, 2010.

I have had a number of exhibitions in Bristol (UK) and been involved in collaborative shows too.
