My father and grandfather were keen photographers, so I picked up a lot from them. I built my own darkroom and printed B+W years ago. Learning with film helps understand the principles. I was a graphic designer in publishing, and relished the coming of desktop publishing as it was known back then. I used Photoshop from the beginning to edit photos, so when digital cameras appeared, that was a natural development. These days I do most editing in Lightroom Classic as it is more efficient than pixel pushing, and has become very powerful. I love taking a well exposed Raw, then shaping it to how I remember a scene. The trouble is, it's much easier taking shots than editing them, so I have a huge backlog!

For years, I've wanted to take good aerial shots since hanging my SureShot film compact under a kite I made, triggered by radio control gear. The results were somewhat random and blurry. I get the odd shot while paragliding, but the weather isn't getting any easier for that. I recently got a drone. I had a great week in Pembrokeshire in June 2022 taking mostly coastal shots on phone, mirrorless and drone. I also love taking shots in Oxfordshire. The red kites fly over my garden every day, so it's wonderful to be able to take landscapes of familiar places from their perspective finally, and of course shots of them.
