Brooke Anderson is an Oakland, CA-based activist photographer with over 15 years of experience in the movement. She uses photos to tell the stories of unsung heroes/heroines in struggles for social, racial, economic, and ecological justice. About her love for movement photography, Brooke says:

“Photos tell stories about who we are and what we’re fighting for. They say: this is what we lived through and how we survived; this is what it looked like to lose our fear and find our dignity; this is how we won, what we sacrificed, and where we fell down and got back up again.

To me, photography is a mirror held up to our common struggles, and is most rewarding when workers and everyday folks see in my photos the incredibly courageous and beautiful people they already are and feel inspired to keep on keepin’ on.”

Brooke’s photos have appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, The East Bay Express, The Oakland Post, Yes! Magazine, The Progressive, Tikkun Magazine, Race Poverty & Environment, and many other online and print publications. Her work has received numerous awards, including from Labour Start (finalist), the SF Chronicle, and the Oakland Convention & Visitors Bureau, and has been exhibited at the Oakland Marriott and Netroots Nation.

When she does not have a Nikon in hand, Brooke can be found hiking, biking, running, rock climbing, yoga-ing, and organizing for worker and climate justice.
