When I got my first DSLR 18 months ago I had no idea how involved and delighted I'd be with this wonderful pastime!

I really enjoyed that first camera + lenses for general photography, birds (although I'm still not happy with my bird shots) portraits and low-light venues to photograph my sons who are musicians. Update! I now have new equipment which really makes a difference to the gear I had when I started. See below

Canon 450D

17-85mm

70-300mm

50mm f/1.8

The 100mm Canon macro lens has been the one I've most enjoyed so far.

My dad was a commercial photographer but I'd hardly ever taken a photo until the last few years!

My dear aunt was an amateur photographer who exhibited internationally, so when she left me money, it was a natural choice to honour her memory by doing better in our chosen hobby. When the 7D's release was announced it was a natural step up. I teamed it with the 17-55mm f/2.8 - a lovely lens for all the non macro uses - especially lowlight gigs!

I plan for a new bird lens though I'm not sure what's the best one - some are so heavy and I don't want to use a tripod if possible. All advice appreciated!

2015: I have refined my kit for 2 main photographic interests: portraits/music/dance/low light shots = 5D3 Canon and for insects/bird shots = 7D2 Canon. I have the necessary lenses for all applications but will think about the new 100-400mmL 2 from Canon to improve my bird photos.

Update

Finally was able to afford this lens - the results are much more satisfying - more keepers and sharp hand-held due to improved IS. I like it!
