[https://www.flickr.com/photos/brodikpetr/8554565287][13-03-2013] Almost a year ago, I've decided to stop using Flickr, because I've felt it's been eating up too much of my time that could have been used elsewhere. There were also no people from my country using Flickr and I wanted to slowly build a name for myself. So I've created a Facebook fanpage, which was successful in a way of getting job offers and meeting important people, but wasn't satisfying enough.

The thing I hated the most about Facebook and what was making me miss Flickr was the absence of photographers and people really enjoying photography on Facebook. The most successful photos were the ones with people in it. Usually little to no artistic value is appreciated on Facebook, a photo of a cute puppy taken with an iPhone is often more admired than a piece of art worth hanging on a wall (not saying I'm at the point of making art, but I'm trying my best). Needless to say, Facebook interface is really primitive for photographer's needs.

Almost every day I kept getting emails from Flickr, saying someone has faved my photo or added me as a contact. In a way it has been almost as active as my FB fanpage, but without any effort from my side.

The final decision to come back was after I've been contacted by Nikon to have one of my old Flickr photos published in the Nikon World magazine. Regardless the effort I put in my carreer, this has been my greatest achievement so far and it happened because of Flickr.

BIO:

I'm 22 years old and I was born in Czech Republic, where I currently reside. I’ve always been fascinated by photography. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been running around the house with our family‘s compact SLR. It was driving my parents mad that I was wasting expensive film on snapshots. When I was in high school, I got my first own camera. It was only a compact superzoom Lumix camera, but I got instantly fascinated by the amount of control I have over the photo using manual settings. I never took any shooting classes, workshops nor had I ever read any book about photography, I just captured photos the way I felt was right. Unfortunately my family didn’t share my enthusiasm and didn’t see any future in photography, so I couldn’t afford anything better than the old Lumix. I eventually gave up on shooting. Many years later, during my first year of university, I felt that my life isn’t what I want it to be, so I left school, found a job and spent all my money on my very first DSLR, the Nikon D5100. Even though I’ve finally felt happy, my parents didn't believe I’m serious about shooting, so I had to go to the university again. I don’t know whether I’m going to finish it or not, but over the time I’ve finally convinced my parents that I want to become a photographer or at least die trying! And even though I have to earn every penny for equipment by myself, they support me with their love and a roof above my head.
