I was brought up in Bristol and became interested in railways and a steam enthusiast in mid-1961. Although many of my records from 1961 are now lost, I do have detailed recordings of steam workings in the Bristol area from April 1962 until early 1966, when steam finished. My first camera was a box brownie, where my photos range from truly dreadful to quite reasonable. In late 1962 I became friends with a fellow steam enthusiast, David Nicholas. His photography and camera were much more sophisticated than mine ! He kindly instructed me in the operation of his camera and allowed me to use his camera from time to time, at Temple Meads, Lawrence Hill and Barrow Road, while he was at work during the day and I was on school holidays. From mid 1963 until Autumn 1964 we recorded and photographed steam in Bristol. Many of the Bristol area photographs on this site which date from 1963-64 were taken by David, some by myself, but after 47 years it is difficult to determine authorship accurately. I am currently working on setting up a website for recording steam workings in Bristol in the 1960’s, starting with 1964.
