I am the co-owner of a small software development firm based in Washington, DC. We build content-managed websites and custom-tailored CRM, financial and business process automationion systems. A lot of this work involves integration with heterogenous and legacy environments. It's great to design and build a system that people use to solve real problems and I love the intellectual challenge.
I also have a passion for photography that I developed as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. I had a lot of amazing subject matter to work with but some really awful lenses. I learned a lot about photography, but I pined for a Nikon F2 Titan with a 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor. When I relocated to Washington, DC after Peace Corps, it turned out that autofocus was the thing. Nobody sold manual focus systems anymore. I scraped together the cash for an F100 and a normal zoom autofocus lens. It was pretty fantastic. In the long run, though, I have found most of my best results come from old manual focus Nikkor glass from the 70s and 80s on a contemporary DSLR body.
I'm an ameteur photographer in the orginal French "lover of" sense. My images have found there way into marketing and business publications from time to time. A series of images that I shot of Senator Tom Harkin back in 1996 is buried somewhere in the Smithsonian collection. I have sometimes had the opportunity to do short term technical assistance on USAID funded development projects. Some of those jobs have given me the opportunity to continue to travel and shoot some amazing places. Now I have two beautiful children as subjects as well. In 2010, our family relocated to Accra, Ghana. We lived there for two years and then moved to Harare, Zimbabwe.
We keep rare breed Azawakh dogs, which are native to the Sahel zone of Africa. Azawakh are the greyhound of the Tuareg and associated tribes. We had a small litter of puppies in December 2012. My Azawakh site is "Aidi wan n'Eezel: the loyal azawakh" at loyalazawakh.com.
Although I have reserved the rights to all of my images on Flickr, I'm happy to allow them to be used for free for non-commercial purposes as long as I am asked first and credited for the shot.
