I'm a keen, UK-based amateur photographer and just happen to be registered blind. Many registered blind people have some useful vision and that's the case for me. My eye condition has taken away all of my detailed central vision and left me with pretty good, low detail peripheral vision. I like to make contact with other visually-impaired photographers to share our experiences and have set up a Flickr group for UK-based visually-impaired photographers which was once quite active but now seems to be a bit quiet. You can find it at: www.flickr.com/groups/vi-uk/pool/
Visually-impaired photographers work in many different ways. If you're interested in how I work, I've produced an album of photos and a brief video at: flic.kr/s/aHsiWgv5nz. If you look at discussions in the group for UK-based visually-impaired photographers you'll get an insight into both why and how we work.
I like to draw attention to the work of photographers who have little or even no vision because it's a great way of challenging preconceptions of what people with sight loss can achieve. I try to avoid words like inspirational, which is much loved by the media. We should be in a culture that just takes it for granted that people with disabilities can turn their hands to most things that they want to do.
Just before my retirement in 2007 from my post as Director of Computing Services at Loughborough University, I became a Trustee and subsequently chairman of Vista, the local, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland charity which improves lives of over 6,000 blind and partially sighted people. I retired from my role in Vista in 2013 and remain an enthusiastic ambassador for Vista's work. Following an initial introduction from my friends at Vista I've also got involved in training people with sight loss to use iPhones and iPads. This is incredibly rewarding work. It's not easy, but the way these devices, along with the right level of training, can empower blind people is astonishing.
If you live in or around Leicestershire and you're a member of a group that might like to learn more about photography by a photographer with sight loss, I've got some fairly light-hearted illustrated talks that I've already given to camera clubs, Rotarys, WIs and others. I'm keen to get the message across that people with disabilities can do all sorts of things that might initially seem surprising. If you'd like to discuss my coming to talk to your group, please email brian.negus@googlemail.com . I don't charge for the talks, but I'd appreciate a donation to Vista.
I've given a few of my photos creative commons licences, but most have standard copyright. I've always been delighted to give permission for non-commercial and some commercial use of my photos. If you use one of my creative commons photos, then please do consider making a donation to Vista through its web site. If you want to use any of my other photos, then please ask. I'll probably say yes and make a similar suggestion! I don't insist you do this, but every little helps. You can find Vista at www.vistablind.org.uk
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Brian, I have just discovered your amazing photos, because of the two "recycling-themed" photos I recently viewed, which I added to two of my galleries. I have just read your "About" with keen fascination. What wonderful work you have done and continue to do, both for your community and through your sharing of photography! I have a Flickr friend who is legally blind, but she does amazing photography too! I have always wondered how, so your explanation above has answered that question. Her name is Shirley Chaisson.

Besides having great floral and travel images, Brian is a key member of our Blind Photographers community. He has been part of our group since the beginning and has worked more than anyone else to extend our membership and presence, especially with his Visually-impaired photographers in the UK. Even more importantly, Brian is a great person, taking time to look through and comment on photos and participating thoughtfully in all or group's discussions and activities. Thanks, Brian!

Brian's photos are amazing, lovely in detail and depicting the love of his surroundings. It's always a pleasure to view his country through his eyes and enjoy the wonder that the photos impart. Aside from that, Brian is an inspiration to others. He freely posted that he suffers from a visual handicap; something that I kept very quiet about for a long time. To share this information freely and see that his photos lack absolutely nothing in quality inspired me greatly. Thanks so very much, Brian, for unknowinly being such a great support for others. I've discovered there are a lot of us with cameras that share your burden.
