Introduction to Brave Arts.
BRAVE ARTS specialises in Graffiti Workshops, Teaching spraypainting & coordinating spraycan art projects & events.
Hi, I'm known as the Graffiti artist 'Brave One'
I've been drawing and painting in a graffiti style since I was a little kid in the 1980's
I first set up 'BRAVE ARTS' in 1997 as a way to make 'doing Graffiti Art' pay.
More about my work through Brave Arts.
I love spray painting and wanted a way to share my passion for Art with as many people as possible.
At school my art teachers didn't see graffiti as art at all. So I went to Art college, and was surprised that my tutors didn't see graffiti as art either!
Hard to believe nowadays but in the mid 90's
...we were still underground!
Finally at university in the late 90's my tutors told me I should write my dissertation centred around the subject of visual languages, Graffiti, and youth subcultures.
which I did and it was fun, but also a really different business to what researching a dissertation must be nowadays!
It was 96 and weird as it seems....WE DIDN'T HAVE THE INTERNET!
So I did a degree in graphic design in the 90's and later whilst studying to be a youth worker I completed the Eastern Arts Board - Artist in Residence course.
so, I understand my subject and the issues that surround it very well.
Graffiti/Art has always been pretty central to my life and the decision to write 'Brave 1' as a tagg, was partly due to the fact that I knew I wanted Art to be how I earned a living! .
....Call me Brave or Stupid?....I think the contents of this web page show how much of an adventure its been so far!
It keeps me busy
Since leaving University, me and my team of friends have painted many large-scale murals, and run hundreds of workshops. With Youth Groups, in Schools, for local Councils art initiatives. At the V& A museum in London, for channel 4 for the BBC, I've even worked in Prison 'doing graffiti'.
Teaching Spray can Art / Graffiti Art........
Young people are often interested in taking part in our form of painting, often because of the stigmas attached to our form of art.
Most young people are attracted to the element of rebellion painting with a spray can denotes.
They are attracted to the fact that painting in graffiti style is something close to being a punishable act, or forbidden form of creativity.
These are the defining factors of our work and through this understanding we find we can successfully connect with most young people.
I feel we have a moral & ethical responsibility to make sure all our students learn a bit about the history and culture that surrounds the theme of 'graffiti art'. As well as discussing the consiquences of pushing the boundaries of the law to breaking point.
Teachers or students, please don't hesitate to contact me if your interested in being involved in one of my 'graffiti/spraycan art projects.
