BIRO ARTWORKS ON PAPER

I am a largely self-taught visual artist and my abstract ballpoint pen drawings are without any conscious and constructed ideas, philosophies or concepts. They are unfettered, spontaneous free improvisations: the flow of lines and shapes manifested on paper via the uncontrolled movement of my right hand and pen driven by my sub-conscious thoughts and emotions.

During my career as a jazz flautist. I realised that I am a synaesthete blending music with shapes dancing and morphing in my mind as I improvise. Unfortunately, whilst suffering a time of deep emotional turmoil I lost my strength and creative impulse to practice and play the flute which requires an enormous amount of concentrated mental and physical work in developing new musical and technical innovations.

Instead I turned to drawing as a creative outlet. Conversely, finding solace in releasing all my trauma by improvising with biro on paper rather than flute improvisations. I was soaked in a soothing, trance-like state like watching the waves of the sea ebbing and flowing in random abandon.

Transportation beyond one’s conscious self is my inspiration. The surprise of a biro artwork that magically materialises on a blank piece of paper. Experiencing the joy of not consciously feeling and controlling anything. A perfect antidote to the relentless, conscious, worthy, predictability of one’s own daily life.

My work confirms my belief that there is a universal spiritual human need in all of us to transcend, purge, reveal ourselves, alleviating feelings and tensions through art, music and the written word.
