After my family was deported, Big Vern took me in and became what some might term an "uncle" to me. Always there with a kind word and a guiding hand, he has shown me that life and Flickr can be warm and funny, as well as dirty and degrading. There are few men on earth who come close to Big Vern.

Big V, has a big heart, which is only surpassed by his photography skills, and his unique eye for capturing moments of humanity that many of us would just walk by.

I look at BigVern as a sort of mentor. His keen critical eye and ability to see through the facades of everyday life have helped me to recognize the sublime beauty resident in the hidden corners and the dark underbelly of this world. I first encountered Vern at a club called "the metro" in London. He introduced himself as Billy at the time. We chatted about photography for a time, and he told me that he repaired camera gear. I proceeded to tell him about my recently malfunctioning telephoto zoom lens, after which he asked me if he could take a look at it. Surprised by his generosity, I agreed and we finished our drinks and went back to my room so he could examine it. When we got there, he was quite surprised at the zoom's focal length, but noticed that the lens would not extend properly. Being quite experienced in these matters, Billy took matters into his expert hands and serviced the lens. It took quite some time, but eventually he got the lens to properly extend fully and retract. The work he did was fantastic (My lens has never worked better) and Vern and I have been friends ever since.

Big Vern... the mustachioed one. What can one say about such a man? I could recount the many ribald tales of Big Vern, Pulitizer Prize Winning Photographer, and myself cruising the back alleys of Bangkok, looking for beautiful scenes to photograph and other activities, but this just isn't the place or time. Big Vern... the mustachioed one. What can one say about such a man? I could recount the many ribald tales of Big Vern, Pulitizer Prize Winning Photographer, and myself cruising the back alleys of Bangkok, looking for beautiful scenes to photograph and other activities, but this just isn't the place or time. I will say this, amidst the grainy shots of stuffed animals, faded celebrities, and abused food, Big Vern occasionally gives us glimpses of his true photographic prowess. His candid, well composed shots of everyday life in London evoke a feeling that one is truly there. His composition skills, imagination, and technique are excellent, and he never disappoints (except maybe for his Tony Robbins series.) Enjoy his photostream, it will not disappoint.

Big Vern, champion of the poor, rescuer of treed cats and friend to the disenfranchised. Vern has to be one of the most generous of spirit and such a serious artist. His words inspire and astound and it was a bit of a surprise when I discovered he was in fact a major porn star of the 1970s. Now he devotes his time to helping others and reading biblical verse each evening at a home for wayward girls. Truly a hero to mankind!

I read recently that “every soldier has a comrade that stands out above the others.” To me, Big Vern is that comrade, a loyal friend and a valiant man who is fighting for the same cause. I can think of no higher accolade.
