Artist’s Statement

My work is based on personal experiences, observations of relationships and the nature of cultural identity, particularly for women. Masks and symbols represent the many faces we use to conform within society; the roles we play and attitudes to them; various events, influences, attitudes and moods. Layers of meaning, and layers of paint, conceal and reveal fragments of hidden stories within each painting and colour is often used to create a stage-lit, fantasy effect, blurring the distinction between what is real and what is imagined and felt. I use a variety of techniques, which vary according to the subject matter and mood I’m trying to create. I often choose to work with irregular shaped canvas to represent the irregular and often complex nature of individuals’ relationships with their social and cultural environments. Thus images seem to extend into their surroundings and are not separated by clean lines and straight-edged barriers from the world, nor confined by frames.

I am happy to accept commissions for paintings or illustrations.

Many thanks,
