Bart van Damme (The Hague, The Netherlands, 1963)

After studying painting at Vrije Academie in The Hague and Minerva Academy in Groningen, Bart van Damme gradually switched to photography and over the years developed a diverse repertoire about infrastructural challenges and control over the man-made landscape.

His work can be seen as a series of research-based projects, asking questions about social, industrial, infrastructural and environmental issues. The work explores landscapes in transformation, their ideological backgrounds and the effects on its inhabitants.

His landscape photography emphasizes the specific Dutch situation, where there is tension between rivers, deltas and the sea, but also between different interest groups like economic and recreational developers and nature conservationists.

I enjoy - and see the sheer beauty, and compositional power - in almost all the photographs he uploads. This man's astute vision has enriched my life, and also shown me what is engaging, significant and aesthetically-powerful in present-day Netherlands, and indeed the world around him. I am so fortunate to have long since discovered his photostream! Thank you Bart van Damme for all your hard work, thoughtful, and careful photography.

Bart van Damme has one the most consistently amazingly good photo streams on flickr. It's hard not to 'fave' very photo he uploads. I highly recommend you have a look, and stay a while to see more. Gavin. (sedge808)

Nihil humanum a me alienum (nothing human is strange to me) best defines Bart's approach to photography. Yes, he is an architect and many of his photos are architectural documentaries, but if there were a new Renaissance, he would certainly be among the avant-garde. His curiosity is insatiable, his culture immense and iconoclastic, and he depicts his world with passion, compassion and humor, be it sand-dunes, exhibitions, Ina - his muse, people, ruins or decadent art. Often with some extraordinary music! A big splash of life-loving energy!
