Originally from Manchester, I developed an interest in photography in my mid-teens. I started shooting Agfa Slide film in Soviet-era cameras (it was all I could afford then). I was fortunate enough to get a Practika MTL3 for my 18th birthday. That was like being given the keys to a sports car compared to the Zenit TTL I had at the time.

Although my interest in photography never left me, I didn't shoot that much for the next twenty-odd years. I also moved to Scotland during that period. A change in my circumstances, in my mid-forties, meant I had more opportunities to take photos. This also coincided with the growing popularity of mirrorless cameras and, being a technophile, further piqued my interest in the subject. I had a low-end Canon DSLR at the time and I went and got myself a Sony NEX-5. It's the small form factor and relatively large sensor intrigued me. I initially thought the NEX was pretty much a novelty and not that impressive. I found it awkward to use because it didn't have a built-in viewfinder (I struggle with digital cameras without a viewfinder). It wasn't until I got the accessory viewfinder for the NEX that I clicked with the camera and realised that DSLRs would soon be things of the past, as I could see that EVFs had many advantages over optical finders. My passion was rekindled. These days, I rarely leave the house without a camera in tow.

I enjoy most genres of photography except fashion but I think Street Photography is my favourite genre, although I don't profess to be any good at it (and since Covid, I'm way out of practice). I'm mainly a digital shooter, but I still, occasionally, shoot film, too.
