Having grown up in a home where art, visual communication, education, and a celebration of life were central, it is no wonder I am an educator who believes that there is a critical role for visual literacy within education. Not only do I visually document my educational endeavors but I also incorporate visual literacy within my educational practices. I have taught from kinder to high school along with teachers for twelve years. There is not an age group or grade that I don't completely enjoy teaching.

As a father of six wonderful children ranging from a newborn to an eighteen yr old, I practice what I preach by visually documenting their lives. I'm obsessed in creating portraits of my subjects using only available light (almost exclusively natural light) with minimal processing (in camera cropping and very minimal post adjustments in LightRoom). This is not because I am a purist, it's just because it's what fits my creative style. Besides, there is so much more going on in life to get caught up just processing old shoots. I also love the challenge of visually capturing the story of complicated happenings (weddings, exhibits, social events, etc).

As I mentioned, I came from an artistic home. Photography is my media, the camera my brush, the world around me is my palette and inspiration. The world is full of opportunities to create and communicate the beauty and wonder I see in it. Hence, the wide range of interests and topics you will find within my photostream.

I think of myself as a father, educator, photographer, and educational technology integration specialist.

I am honored to be an Apple Distinguished Educator for my visual literacy efforts with at-risk student populations.
