Baniga is a remnant of the ancient Gondwanan rainforests that cloaked Australia and is contiguous with the World Heritage Listed Dorrigo National Park. At 170ha, it is home to two pristine creek catchments which flow all year, one of the largest tracts of cool temperate rainforest in NSW outside of national parks, a handful of ancient trees whose lives have spanned perhaps a millenium, threatened frog, bird and mammal species and fascinating warm temperate rainforest with links to forests in South America. Perched at the edge of the Great Escarpment it receives 2500-3000mm of rain a year, which replenishes the moss beds, epiphytes and waterfalls. The world's most southerly bird of paradise - the Paradise Riflebird - lives and displays in the towering Hoop Pines of Baniga.
