Having started to travel in the last few years, I have found I was drawn to camera's - both video and still. After playing around with a very few compact point and shoot types (basically because they could 'live' in my handbag and always be close by) I got tired of the limited control I had over what I could and couldn't capture. I purchased a Canon Powershot S5 because it seemed logical - i.e still small enough to carry around in a slightly bigger handbag but with LOTS more versitility - I then found that I was becoming frustrated with the limits of a 'bridging' camera and I wanted the options offered only by a full DSLR. So I became the proud owner of a Canon 450D and a few different lenses to cover all occasions. That lasted me another 12mths before I decided to go the 'whole hog' and buy a 5D MkII - now all I have to do is find the time to get out there.
I used to paint but since my work has taken me far, far from home I can't lug around 20kg's of paints and associated 'stuff'. The camera has turned out to be the next best thing (although the weight of camera, len's and Laptop is probably just as heavy as the painting gear - but more compact!) - especially when I am surrounded by stunning Nor-West Australian scenery or Jungle deep in the Congo... and it's forced me to think outside the box for Macro shots because I have to make do with what I have on hand... which isn't much!
My aspirations are to continue improving my technique and technical know how... I am still pretty haphazard in my photo taking and it's quantity more than quality... I figure if I take HEAPS of photo's the chances increase that I will get something great. I'd love to be one of those people who can take great shots consistantly though - then maybe I'd stand a chance at making something more of this than just a hobby... and now that is the plan... Hopefully next year I will be able to call myself a 'Freelance Photographer and Artist'... does that mean I will have to quit Flickr???
