The family tradition is carried on as sixth generation sign manufacturers. In 1875, ancestor D.F. Balton founded Balton & Sons in Memphis, TN. The company quickly gained a reputation for quality craftsmanship. Most of Memphis' billboards, theater marquees, and street signs during the early 1900's were the work of Balton & Sons. The Balton family was the manufacturers of the famous Holiday Inn sign in the 1950's. As the city grew and times changed, so did the family and business. Sign technology moved from hand painted signs to the use of plastics, neon, LCD panels, and computers. Each generation of the Balton family benefited from the experiences of the past while contributing new ideas.
