A longtime lover of photography, hiking, and art, I tend to take shots of nature, my hiking companions, and things that I see as art. The "art" includes unusual rock formations and found objects, as well as museum pieces. The hiking companions include our dogs and people who accompany me when I work on guides to trails in the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Over nearly 30 years, I've written and done photography for a half dozen guidebooks, with multiple editions of several of those. The book work led to mentors and colleagues, including a longtime cartographer for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, a nuclear submarine engineer, and an expert on GPS applications. Most of us are now of retirement age but still active on trails and other places. Working with these colleagues has provided more learning and satisfaction than any other jobs I've held -- including service as a Marine Corps infantry company commander, doing acquisitions for a European company from an office in New York's World Trade Center, and a stint as financial officer of New York's Museum of Modern Art.
