I credit my grandfather with any genetic photo taking ability I may have. I didn't know until after he died that he at one time (maybe 1940s-60s) was an avid amateur photographer - realized it when a box of his slides appeared after he died. Photography was always important to him as was seen in the serious professional portraits he had made of family members that were always hanging in the home. My father is an excellent amateur photographer and my cousin (his nephew) is a superb professional photographer. My brother is pretty darn good as well.
My photo experience is more about composition than technical skill. I was an art history major which really focused me in "learning to look." My professional career has centered largely on dealing with photos - curating museum exhibits, designing publications, or producing historical documentaries. So I've developed an eye, but never had to develop a roll of film!
