WELCOME TO My SANITARIUM

Born and bred in this sunny island I call Sin City ... strangely I don't remember my childhood days that much. Am I repressing the memories? I don't really know ...

A graduate from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and a Mechanical Engineer by profession. I've always been impressed by pictures from National Geographic. I think that's where I get my influence from. Took up photography seriously only since 2004 and have been shooting non-stop.

To me, photography is one way for me to appreciate the beauty of God's creations - be it landscapes or people. I don't consider myself a photographer ... I'm just a snapper. I snap whatever fancies my eyes.

Besides photography, I love music, travel and history, especially Islamic history. I've made it a mission in life to return to my heritage, not only as a Malay, but also as a Muslim and try to capture the life, tradition and culture of the Islamic world.

I'm one of the pioneers to set up the first Malay Photography internet forum/community in Singapore at www.kliqueimages.com in September 2005. Also I had the opportunity and privelage to have my first joint photo exhibition at the Malay Heritage Centre in December 2005, where selected photos (about 18 nos.) from my first travel series were exhibited. My first travel series was titled "Journeys - Southern Xinjiang".

One of my photos that I took in Xinjiang had been accepted for the exhibition "People, Places & Things - Art Found in Everyday Life" at The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA in Sept 2006. The image can be viewed in my photostream here: www.flickr.com/photos/axisofjustice/48211235/in/set-72157...

Five of my images were also selected & included in a tabletop calender produced by The Ministry of Information, Communications & the Arts (MICA) & given as a gift to the IMF-World Bank Meeting delegates held in Singapore in Sept 2006. The 5 images selected can be found in my photostream here:

At the 54th Singapore International Photography Award (SIPA) 2007, organised by The Photographic Society of Singapore (PSS), I received an FIAP Honourable Mention in the Digital Colour (Open) Section for this image: www.flickr.com/photos/axisofjustice/159108947/in/set-7215... ... and an Acceptance in the Digital Travel (Colour) Section for this image: www.flickr.com/photos/axisofjustice/468124252/in/set-7215....

Just recently announced the 2008 winners of the Pilsner Urquell International Photography Awards 2008. Two of my images - Innocence & Sunset@Changi Boardwalk - received Honorable Mentions in the Non-Professional People-Children and Nature-Landscape & Nature-Sunsets categories respectively.

Update - July 2009

Just recently announced the 2009 winners of the Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3). One of my images I submitted - Innocence - received an Honorable Mention in the Non-Professional category.

Update - Nov 2009

Photography has become a passion and an obsession. I seldom leave home without my camera. A Nat'l Geo photographer wannabe ...

Three quotes that inspires me:

1. "... it is not the artist that should be praised, but that which the artist is praising" ~ Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens)

2. "There's no such thing as a perfect picture, only a perfect moment." ~ Joe Buissink

3. "A perfect photo that is empty of any feeling will never equal a blurred photo full of emotion." ~ Olivier Follmi
