My approach to photography is very different depending on the subject matter. In my nature photography I'm not so much interested in adhering to the rules of good photography as I am in capturing an image of a rare species, or even common species, which may hold some importance on a scientific level. Whereas in my travel photography my photos can be somewhat abstract, portraying color and form for its own value, Photographing people during my travels is very gratifying. I love to capture them in an unguarded moment, but I also encourage a straightforward portrait. In Mexico I look for opportunities to disprove the conventional views we Americans hold of the country. The Mexican culture is very vibrant, full of texture, rich in community values, rooted in its pre-history, possessing a diverse indigenous population with a very strong arts and crafts tradition. We in America can benefit much from assimilating the Mexican culture into our own if we can learn to overcome our fear and prejudice.
