1958-2008

Album souvenir of the 50th Anniversary of the Atomium.

The history of the Atomium is first and foremost that of the Belgian people's love an extraordinary building that symbolises a state of mind that combines aesthetic boldness with technical skill.

Tha Atomium's unusual and unforgettable appearance has a rare quality : it puts everyone who sees it in good spirit and gives them a chance to dream.

After a highly successful renovation, widely welcomed by its faithful public, and the thorough reorganization of the square around it, this is the time to celebrate the Atomium’s 50th anniversary in fitting style.

It has been the very symbol of modernity and progress; and we want it to remain so, even if those concepts – the prime movers of the 20th century – have evolved with time.

What do we mean today by “progress”? What about its promises of happiness? That is what we are inviting this year’s visitors to the Atomium to think about, in our specially- designed programme of activities to celebrate this anniversary.

On the occasion of this jubilee we do well to remind ourselves of those happy days, and to reflect on what “progress” meant at the time and how it sounds now in the 21st century.

Many activities have been scheduled to follow up the recent renovation, supported by our public and private partners.

Each visit to the Atomium is a source of surprise and wonder.

In this year 2008 we are making great efforts to give it an additional glance for the greatest enjoyment of all, those who can remember Expo 58 and those who will be discovering it for the first time through this jubilee: the dreamers, young and old, Belgian and foreigner.
