First thing that struck me - looking at Ashlee's pictures - were her eyes. The girl must have mirrors in her eyes… highly reflective indeed. Flickr made me discover the art of the selfie. There's lots of young girls the age of Ashlee out there taking pictures of themselves, but usually you need to look at them with Carly Simon's "Your So Vain" as soundtrack… in most cases the wonna be model-game is getting boring pretty soon. Not with Ashlee, she doesn't belong in the "I look like Beyoncé" -category. I think she doesn't fit anywhere… she is anything but your young Afro-American girl next door. Often I get the feeling as if she's alone in this world. Her work breaths feelings of solitude, wonder and at times there's even a slight gothic touch. The girl is a bit of an enigma to me… Not fitting is the prerogative of the true artist. Ashlee's medium is photography and - damn - she can take good pictures. Simplicity, purism and discipline. Herself as subject, a camera, the light, cleaver framing and BOOM: beauty, feelings and poetry are evoked. She doesn't need a lot of attributes. A scarf, a dress, a wig… She's highly productive. Often a photograph is part of a series which makes the message and impact only bigger. This artist is searching. Looking for that perfect picture/emotion. Often B&W but also in color… and when it's color, it's her own color. Recurring things: doorposts, upside downs, poses… never boring. It are études really. Her style is definitely already matured by now… A tip for the upcoming indie bands out there: Try to contact her. Her video work is as breathtaking as her stills. So here's my advice to the big contemporary art galleries out there: Try to contact her. Sign her, pamper her, make sure she keeps on doing what she's doing but don't interfere in her creative process. This is a bona fide artist. Ashlee is already big on Flickr. She could be big for the world!
