Asbestorama is an ever-growing collection of asbestos-related photographs and images intended for asbestos awareness education and editorial discourse. There is a strong need for learning more about asbestos safety concerns, and what better way to advance this than through sharing pictures. If a picture is "worth a thousand words", then perhaps these photos may speak volumes.
Currently, since its inception the Asbestorama photostream on Flickr has received over 45+ million views and many of the copyright-protected photos are used (with legal authorization) by many organizations, institutions and professionals in a multitude of applications and resources worldwide, including, but not limited to: product research, educational blogs and websites, conference graphics & brochures, non-profit music video, informational presentations, corporate and governmental training programs, regulatory guidance documents, science and trade publications, university textbooks, museum and gallery exhibits, and even as legal evidence.
The vast majority of self-collected Asbestorama photos depict a variety of materials and issues associated with asbestos, ranging from workplace conditions to mining and industrial landscapes, common product materials to historical product samples, and many geological and mineralogical specimens. So far, only a few thousand images have been posted on the Asbestorama photostream; however, being only a part-time personal endeavor, there are still yet tens-of-thousands more upcoming images to upload.....eventually. Stay tuned for more...
While most of the earlier photos on Asbestorama were collected as simple “snapshots” using a small pocket-camera, the popularity of the images seemed more based on subject matter than for actual technical qualities. In recent years, Asbestorama has finally upgraded to better DSLR equipment, improving capabilities in image quality, composition, and techniques, but is still a work-in-progress.
Also included in Asbestorama are a few captured/scanned images depicting historical and editorial perspectives, such as from certain historical books, industry-related documents, manufacturer catalogs and pamphlets, advertisements, film archives, and other related media.
Hopefully, Asbestorama photos provide an interesting resource for awareness and learning more about asbestos-related issues and help prevent exposure risk to this ubiquitous, toxic threat…asbestos.
