The Art Of AnuarDan

Kampung houses morphing into the skyscrapers dominate AnuarDan’s latest paintings; a tale of rapidly disappearing village life, told through muted tones of brown and yellow, designs that are almost abstract, giving glimpses of a vanishing world and declining arts.

With the kampung house series, however, Anuar seem to have come into his own.The complex theme - deconstructed houses, intricate architectural detail overlaid on household implements; shadowy people lurking, chatting in doorways - convays a sense of impermanence. Strongly vertical, the houses are surrounded by elongated doorways, cubes and windows, giving the impression that houses themselves are changing, that some time soon, they will have given way and become one of the increasingly ubiquitous skyscrapers. The shadowy figures, ghosts of people, emphasise this decline: it isn’t just buildings that are disappearing, but a way of life.
