“People and their stories” – this could be the subtitle of Anja Hebrank’s photographical work. Only at first sight, one would categorize it as typical street photography, but the artist extends this genre by focusing on the protagonists in the pictures than the urban surroundings.
At all times, she lodges a claim to create a connection between the stories of these people and the viewer, to give the photos an experienceable dimension. In the process, she does not only capture the daily routine of a butcher in a very sensitive and caring way, but also the silent concentration of a traveling pianist as well as a short moment of rest of a group of builders.
In addition to the intuition for interesting characters, Anja Hebrank’s photographs are characterized by the development in black and white, which underlines the facial expressions of the protagonists by creating a clear contrast between dark and light areas. The interesting compositions of the photos represent the artist’s feel for her dialogue partners and give them a natural and spontaneous look.
Anja Hebrank was born in Stade, Germany, in 1986 and received her first camera for her 10th birthday. Since then, the graphic designer and fine arts teacher has been drawing her inspiration from various journeys and simple every day life situations.
