Mad as a box of frogs!

Well, what can I say? I love photography, more importantly I love wildlife photography! But I guess most of you already know that.

There is nothing more natural to me than walking around with a camera in my hand and although I love all wildlife my favourite subjects would have to be big cats, raptors and puffins.

The reason I favour wildlife photography is that it can be so unpredictable and the natural world fascinates me, especially to be able to capture the emotion of an animal to try and feel their thoughts and realise that, like us, they feel pain, love, happiness and grief - it is impossible to achieve the same shot twice and mastering your equipment to achieve the ultimate shot in a split second is, in itself, an art form.

I do not favour post processing but I fully appreciate the skill of those that can - that is not to say that I haven't tried it, modern photography often dictates perfection, but I would much rather hone my skill behind the lens.

I feel that photography is a 'practice' - one can never prepare themselves enough - Photographers that inspire me are of course, David Lloyd but more recently Marina Cano, (a wildlife photographer based in Northern Spain) whose work I greatly admire as she pushes the boundaries and through her shots encourages me to do the same.

Far from home...

Sometimes getting the right shot is not necessarily about how technically precise it is but it's about 'capturing the moment'.

I also love to spend hours looking at other peoples work.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my photostream and I hope you enjoy what you see.

(I don't believe in upsetting or intruding on the personal space or habitat of any creature and I can't stand people that do this just to get a shot, as far as I'm concerned - if an animal becomes aggressive towards you then it's because you got too close - and it's your own fault and I have no sympathy!)

Please respect my wishes and copyright and please don't ever use any of my pictures in any way shape or form without prior written consent from me.

I became acquainted with Ania on flickr this year, I am so pleased that our paths crossed in this amazing world of cyber space, and that we are able to share our passions for photography and nature in this way. The technical skill and attention to details that Ania puts into each and every image is amazing. You would swear that her animal photographs were taken in the wild. They all have stunning colour, details and focus. Beautifully composed and in breath taking clarity. Ania is an extemely acomplished photographer and knows how to make her images stand out above the crowd. She always shows her appreciation of my work by giving enthusiastic and detailed comments. Thank you for being a good friend and loyal supporter of my photography too Ania. Sincere and warm regards. Alan Ginn

I am Ania's mother. 'Ah', you say, 'not an unbiased view then'. I am not a photographer, I paint portraits, but I am not without understanding of what skills Ania has. She has invited me to many of her photo shoots and has insisted I invest in camera equipment identical to hers (an expense poorly justified!). Let me just say, that I can be standing next to her focusing on the same subject with pretty much the same settings and although I can achieve a technically adequate image, it somehow lacks 'moment'. By that I mean that split second between 'OK' and 'terrific'. I do not think you can teach that 'timing'. In painting it can be that one brush stroke or the one splash of colour, that transforms a painting, from a visual experience to a visceral experience. A good photographer takes consistently well executed images, a great photographer, makes you 'catch your breath'. Ania aims for the latter and she is increasingly succeeding. Every art form has its journey of discovery with no finite destination beyond the next image. I am in the enviable position of not only enjoying Ania's 'next image', but of enjoying a certain measure of pride, when that image does 'catch my breath'.

What can I say about Ania Jones and her style and passion for photography. For me Ania has been the single most influential photographer on my bumpy journey through photography. When I started out and joined Flickr, her images were the ones that stood out from the crowd the most. They stood out and continue to do so as Ania has the extremely rare ability to capture beautiful images that are not only technically perfect but also exquisitely composed. Infact Ania’s compositional awareness is as good as it gets and still leaves me in awe. Ania does not take photographs, she captures images and these images capture moments, you cannot help but pause when viewing her images.. Ania also brings her wonderful sense of humour to her photography especially on the captions that often brings a smile to my face. She has from the beginning, to this day been the most encouraging person I know, providing construction criticism as well as valued tips and inspiring comments on my own images and my journey through photography. Not bad for someone I have never met.. I am glad I can call on her and trust her opinions, but most of all I am glad Ania has chosen photography.... Or did photography choose Ania...! Don’t change and keep up the phenomenal work old friend… Jas x

Many people that look at the photographic medium look at it with critical eyes and judge shots on their technical prowess. For many they cannot understand how it is possible that we take these shots - "What setting did you use? What Lens? etc..." But I think I have found the secret to photography - Passion! If you lack passion you may be able to take a technically proficient shot but it will always lack that certain something...... that spark that draws you in. I have always been captivated by Ania's photography, on multiple levels; She has great technical ability and always perfectly composes her shots, but for me it is her deep love of all things wild that really captures that moment in time when she shoots. From humble insects to magnificent Wild Cats, she conveys her love and admiration for nature in each and every photo. I always check my account to see her next upload and take inspiration from Ania's ability to capture 'that moment'. I am so proud to call her my friend :-) Cheers G

I'm excited to see her future uploads and I'm waiting for the day I discover her photos are in National Geographic.
