I studied natural sciences in Germany and Switzerland, received my Ph.D. from EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) with a thesis on artificial photosynthesis for solar energy conversion, and conducted research on Hydrogen production by solar water splitting and on rechargeable batteries. During this time I prepared thousands of Nanopowders from Titanium dioxide and more toxic chemicals such as chromium and cobalt. These Nanopowders were mixed by hand with pistil and mortar without any protection, which may have caused my Glioblastoma.

I have been documenting the diversity of life in Ecuador as an independent scientist since 2011 and sharing over 28.000 photos on my page Ecuador Megadiverso (www.flickr.com/andreaskay/albums) as well as videos (www.youtube.com/AndreasKay), hoping to raise more awareness for these threatened treasures.
