Anders Nilsson in memoriam / 1953 - 2018

With great sadness, I have to inform you that my husband Anders passed away on the 3rd of April 2018.

Open up your eyes

See how life time flies

Open up and let the light back in.

Open up your heart

Let the lovin' start

Open up and let the light back in.

Neil Young, ”You and Me”, Harvest Moon

We will remember him with gratitude for his kindness, wisdom and his great photography.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Quality doesn't mean deep blacks and whatever tonal range. That's not quality, that's a kind of quality. The pictures of Robert Frank might strike someone as being sloppy - the tone range isn't right and things like that - but they're far superior to the pictures of Ansel Adams with regard to quality, because the quality of Ansel Adams, if I may say so, is essentially the quality of a postcard. But the quality of Robert Frank is a quality that has something to do with what he's doing, what his mind is. It's not balancing out the sky to the sand and so forth. It's got to do with intention." (Elliott Erwitt)

"A photograph is not only an image (as a painting is an image), an interpretation of the real; it is also a trace, something directly stencilled off the real, like a footprint or a death mask." (Susan Sontag)

"A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know." (Diane Arbus)

"I have been frequently accused of deliberately twisting subject matter to my point of view. Above all, I know that life for a photographer cannot be a matter of indifference. Opinion often consists of a kind of criticism. But criticism can come out of love. It is important to see what is invisible to others. Perhaps the look of hope or the look of sadness. Also, it is always the instantaneous reaction to oneself that produces a photograph." (Robert Frank)

"Sharpness is a bourgeois concept" (HCB)

I go to his stream and I end up examining myself. His images coax me into honesty. I remember the first time I came across Anders stream. I got the sense that he was All- Knowing in a way. And the biggest thing I have to say about Anders is that I am not frightened by him being All-knowing. I would run, out of fear of everything ugly that is in me and us, if such knowledge were in the wrong hands. But Anders makes admittance beautiful. You're not on flickr or on the internet when you're on Anders stream. You're just with his powerful images, and what a privilege that is!

I like UR photos, because they are so natural, a few will say maybe: so easy, but UR photos have so much feelings, I dont know how to do that in my picture, Master.

A view of the world through a lens. All persons become photo opportunities, doing nothing but everyday stuff. The images in this photostream show base humanity at its best and worst. Often they bring a laugh because the pictures make us see our own selves.

Anni has an amazing talent and he is a big inspiration to a lot of people! He is the best street photographer on Flickr, always supportive, generous and kind. Truly a Gentleman. :)

Anni, whom i know now is Anders, I picture in the background of every busy street, chronicleing life, people, emotion, a moment there. His work draws my eye to visit, to look, to learn. Mostly in mono, which diminishes distraction maaking for more detail. Thank you Anders, you inspire me to have the courage to press buttons in front of persons, either knowingly or not. He shoots from the hip....I think quite literally for some of his angles have been astonishing! Also I find his captures are taken with such clarity and candidness and that's what draws me in. Even though I've been a friend and fan of his for a short time, Anders has become a fast favorite not only for his outstanding photography, but as a friend too. He is extremely generous, kindhearted and handsome which leads to a combination that makes Anders very special!

He is a great documentarist of ordinary life. But there is always something special in his photos. Sometimes it is explicit, sometimes you have to watch twice. But then there it is, a glance in someone's eye, somebody in the background who's watching him, just the scene or the composition. The man has a very keen eye for situations! He says he sleeps now and then but I don't believe him :) I watch his pictures daily and it seems to me that he's always got his camera on him... Next to his qualities as a street photographer I would like to mention that he's also one of the kindest people I met here on Flickr these past few months. I learn a lot from his comments! Thank you for that. His name is anni gbg.
