Ash D has been exploring her surroundings through photographic practice for the past six years. As a child she grew up deeply engaged with various forms of dance movement. Upon moving to New York City, where she attended New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, she discovered alternative ways to creatively engage with her new urban environment.

Albeit her passion for social and cultural knowledge has always existed it was not thoroughly actualized until she put a camera in her hand while living in Paris in 2006. Her experience abroad and her new love for creating images changed her life, her perspective, and her heart. When Ash discovered her camera as a tool for social awareness she began to not only record things around her, but also arrange them, marking her presence within the social scene. Her photographs are a visual response to an emotional encounter. They compose the world in frames by eternalizing fleeting moments and transforming movement into static representation.

Within the past few years her work has been published and exhibited internationally. It has crossed borders, discussing a range of topics including: the materialization of gender, cultural effects of image production, the performance of self, and the formation of bodies through urban transportation. Ash D’s current expression and thought emanates from an illusion of time and reality. Through visual representations of the body she aims to understand the relation between self and others by evaluating the social positioning of subjects and their relation to space through movement and form.

She recently completed her MA in Photography and Urban Culture at Goldsmiths, University of London, and now lives and works in Brooklyn. She is currently perusing both photography and curatorial work and is involved with several artistic communities in New York City.
