I love love photography. I am totally mad for images and I eat Flickr up like cake.
I started in college with a couple photo and design classes, (my major was art history). After college I went to work at a super cool, but now extinct gallery, Sixpspace.
I then went work for my favoritate photo lab in Santa Monica, Sea Hour Photo, which became Photographica, and then became exstinct as well (hello, people, we have been in a recession for a while).
Anyway, working at the lab blew my little mind. I loved making people's images come into this world and fix up to shine even more. It was back in the day, so we still had an old optical machine- which was the reason I was so attracted to the lab's product- I learned that most labs had thrown out there optical machines.
All our customer's were loyal regulars- I got to know them well. One man only took Fuji 200 of flowers after a rain, so if it had rained, we knew he would be in with a roll. An other women took photos of water births- hugly eye opening for little 20 year old me. We printed them in a special chocolate sepia- it made the blood look more organic, less garish. Everyone had their thing, and we paid attention.
Such a strange way to know people- through their images, but it is really the best way for me. Flickr has recreated this experience- which is way I love it so.
I chugged along with the little lab that could for a couple years, first as a counter person, then as a photoshopper/graphic designer. After we closed I took my act on the road and have been doing work in photography and graphic design ever since, and a little filmmaking too.
Please enjoy, and comment- it makes it seem more like the lab.
