I grew up in big sky country of Alberta, Canada which has hugely influenced my imagination and approach to composition. My subjects these days are mostly musicians and bands from Hamilton, Ontario (where I recently moved). I am an assistant at Vibewrangler recording studio, which has allowed my love for music and photography to team up.
I am a "serious amateur" photographer, mostly self-taught but I've gone to a couple workshops over the years. (I mean, you can teach yourself anything with the internet these days.)
The most impacting photography workshop I've been to was given by Mary Ellen Mark, at a college in Calgary, AB. She took us through her 'Prostitutes of Bombay' series, the images of which will be forever burned on my memory. Her thoughts on photography were deeply insightful, and it was such a pleasure to learn directly from a master of the craft.
My only film camera is a Holga (with flash). Though film is too expensive a medium for me to work in for the most part - so I shoot digital. I recently upgraded from a Rebel XT (the shutter was about to crap out on me), to a 40D. I want to be a minimalist when it comes to gear - or at least keep it affordable and portable. I'm a hippy, I move around!
Over the years, I've almost worked exclusively with natural/ambient lighting. I'm on the verge of beginning my adventures of working with a single, off-camera strobe. I just found and joined the Strobist Flickr group, and am incredibly excited by their quality shots and wealth of knowledge!
