I first started to truly appreciate photography many years ago while living, working, and doing medical research in the Amazon. On some afternoons, the rains would come down suddenly, heavy and warm in the rainforest. Wherever I was, whether back in my hut or still caught in the rain, making my way upriver by dugout canoe, I watched and felt the rains as they cleared the dust from the trees, from my hut, and also from my mind.
It was especially at those times when I realized that some things were impossible to describe in words, and that however much I tried, time could not be sped up, slowed down, or changed in any way to recapture even an instant. I found that one of the only ways to partially hold on to those "fleeting moments" was through photography. And I found that maybe, if the pictures were rich enough, it may be possible to string those moments together and relive them again either alone or with others close to me, even though they might have been worlds away at the time.
I have been back in the United States now for many years. I currently spend my days working with refugees from many parts of the world, including Somalia, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Bosnia, Iran, Russia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Latin America. Every day, my patients open up the world to me.
Over the last few years, I have also become a father x 2. My wife and children continually give me such an incredible amount of joy. This site is dedicated to them.
I hope you enjoy.
