Palazzo Casati Stampa, the sixteenth-century building at Via Torino, 61 in Milan’s city centre, has been home to Al Pascià for over a hundred years. Established in 1906, Al Pascia' has received two awards: one from the Lombardy Regional Authority in recognition of its “historic business concern” and one from Milan City Council for the merit of being a “historic establishment”.

Our history

Since the beginning, when only pipes and tobacco were sold, our mission has always been the same: to promote beauty, by nurturing our feel for materials and shapes, developing close working relationships with the best artisans, but above all listening to our clients. Indeed, it is the clients who led us to expand our range, when they began to ask us in 1990 for pipe and tobacco bags that would match the excellence of our smoking equipment.

It is but a short step from briar wood to leather for people who love natural materials, their complexity, the infinite range of sensations which are never exactly the same that a good briar and leather evoke. We seek the best suppliers of raw materials, leading pipe makers in Europe and in other parts of the world, and the most refined Italian specialists in leather goods. The entire creative process is marked by close co-operation with our artisans, from the initial design to the choice of materials and finishes to the final product, with special emphasis on the manufacturing techniques. For example, together with our leather experts we have revived almost forgotten traditional eighteenth-century crafting skills.

Palazzo Casati Stampa, il cinquecentesco edificio di Via Torino 61 nel centro di Milano, ci ospita da più di cent’anni. Al Pascià, riconosciuto “bottega storica” dal Comune di Milano e “negozio di storica attività” dalla Regione Lombardia, iniziò a esistere proprio in questo luogo nel 1906.

La storia

Fin dalle origini, quando il campo d’azione si limitava agli articoli da fumo, la nostra missione è sempre stata la stessa: promuovere il bello. Coltivando la nostra sensibilità per i materiali e le forme, intavolando rapporti intensi con i migliori artigiani, ma soprattutto ascoltando i nostri clienti. Proprio loro ci hanno portato ad ampliare l’offerta quando, dal 1990, iniziarono a chiederci porta tabacco e porta pipe che fossero all’altezza dei nostri arnesi da fumo.

Dalla radica alla pelle il passo è breve quando si amano i materiali naturali, la loro complessità, l’infinita gamma di sensazioni mai esattamente uguali che una buona radica, una buona pelle possono suscitare; quando si vanno a individuare e coinvolgere i migliori produttori di materie prime, i più bravi pipe-makers di tutta Europa e di altre parti del mondo, i più raffinati specialisti italiani della pelle e del cuoio. La collaborazione e il confronto con gli artigiani hanno sempre interessato tutte le fasi del processo creativo, dall’ideazione alla scelta del materiale e delle finiture fino al prodotto finito, con un occhio particolare alle tecniche di lavorazione: assieme ai nostri maestri della pelle e del cuoio, ad esempio, abbiamo fatto rivivere metodologie del Settecento quasi dimenticate.
