I'm going the opposite direction from most photographers. I used to use an SLR and manual settings. I progressed to a fairly serious non-SLR digital but found that it gave me good results on automatic so I started to get lazy. Now I have a pocket Lumix with a 10x zoom and use it mainly on automatic and then use Photoshop-style processing to get what I want. I'm more of a computer expert than photographic expert so I'll leave the depth-of-field manipulation to better photographers than me.
I'm also not a fan of the surrealistic photos which seem to be flooding Flickr. There's nothing wrong with a bit of correction to the contrast and colour but I tend not to distort the truth too much. I'm starting to use cropping more than before. I used to have an aversion to cropping to anything apart from the normal proportions but I'm overcoming that as can be seen here and there.
Portraiture interests me but it takes a certain type of person to go up to someone in the street and say "You have an interesting face. Can I photograph it?" and I'm not that type of person.
