Alexander Soukas - The Folder

Alexander Soukas is a widely recognized professional origami artist who has been practicing the art form for over 15 years. He is an expert in the genres of geometric patterns, also known as tessellation folding, In 2006, Alexander met and began training in handmade papermaking with Michael Lafosse – a leading master of the art and an internationally recognized pioneer of the field. At age fourteen, Soukas's work was exhibited at the Fitchburg Art Museum in the exhibit, "On the Edge: Contemporary Origami." His work has since been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. His geometric designs are folded from his own handmade paper, many of which are in private collections throughout the country. Soukas's training and background in the fine arts gives a sensitive painterly quality to his work in what is an often times mathematically driven field. This blend between art and science has led Soukas to be an invited lectureter and teacher at all levels of education throughout the country. His teaching extends to live events and folding demonstrations at both public and private coporate functions. Soukas is currently working on a collaborative project with Michael Lafosse and Richard Alexander of Origamidō Studio.

Alexander's penname, Oruhito, comes from the Japanese words, Oru (to fold), and Hito, (person) which roughly translates to "one who folds" or the "the man who folds"

Alexander Soukas - The Painter

Alexander's serious training in the fine arts began upon attending the Walnut Hill School for the arts, one of five high schools in the country dedicated to rigorous training in music, ballet, theatre, writing, and visual arts. Unsatisfied with his studies, and desiring to pursue a career as an artist, he began homeschooling as a way of earning his diploma while undertaking an apprenticeship with realist figure painter Jason Polins. Soukas studied traditional painting and drawing in Boston with Polins for 4 and a halfyears, where he is now an assistant and visiting teacher at Polins' atelier, The Boston School of Painting. After High school, Soukas studied with scholarship, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in a coordinated program with UPenn for a year before dropping out to seek a more rigorous classical training at Studio Incamminati: the atelier of world renowned painter Nelson Shanks. Alex is currently enrolled in their full time professional program.
