I moved from Michigan to Alaska in 1976. Thanks, to my mom, I have been taking pictures since I was about 5 years old. My mom, was into shooting black & white. Did her own developing & printing.

I enjoy photography more than anything else. It gets me out in nature and up close to so many animals. I enjoy photographing almost everything in nature. After switching from film to digital, photography has become even more enjoyable. When not working I am usually out taking pictures. This has led to many exciting adventures. Like the time I got stuck 500 feet up on a cliff face while free climbing up to some Dall Sheep rams. Mountain Rescue, came to my rescue. Took a different route up, got above me, sent a climber down on ropes. He had me get into a harness and they lowered me down on ropes. Ever wonder what it would be like to have a bear charge you? I used to. ;-) Over the years, I have been charged 5 times by grizzlies and about 35-40 times by black bears. Been grabbed by black bears 4 times. Still, I was never hurt by them. Cow moose are more dangerous. I really enjoy photographing wildlife. Bears and Dall Sheep being favorites. Although, I don't really push selling my photos they have been published in quite a few publications. Outdoor Photographer, National Wildlife, National Inquirer, Field & Stream, Alaska Magazine, Horzu Magazine, Cabela's, BBC, Natures Best, Terre Sauvage, Gleaner, Northern Lights Calendar, just to name a few, plus many others used for post cards, calendars and books. While the sales don't make me rich they do pay for trips and new photo equipment. I have won Grand Prize in National Wildlife's Photo Contest, was a First Place Winner in the BBC Photo Contest, won First Place two years in a row in the Field & Stream photo contest, as well as taking first place in quite a few other contests. I enjoy sharing my photos with others. I can honestly say I have never taken a picture that I didn't think could be improved. I guess that is what I keep striving for, that elusive "perfect photo". One that I can truly look at and not find something to improve on. Then, maybe that would take all the fun out of it. ;-) Best wishes. Gary

So, far I really enjoy Flickr. Meeting lots of really nice people. I truly enjoy and appreciate the comments. One thing I like about Flickr is that I can display some of my favorite photos from other years, photos that have special meaning to me.

Because of a new change on Flickr I feel it necessary to remind all that:

I've been following Gary for a number of years. It started with a bear, then a moose, then, of all things a large moth! It doesn't matter what the subject is, Gary's output has worn out all the superlatives and adjectives that I can possibly use . I have never been "into" the technical aspects of photography. It doesn't matter what the subject is, Gary's output has worn out all the superlatives and adjectives that I can possibly use . I have never been "into" the technical aspects of photography. I prefer what an image says to me. Gary's images speak volumes. One of the best photographers on Flickr and, he could easily hold his own with Nat Geo photogs. Having worked at Woods Hole Oceanographic on Cape Cod, there were professional photographers who astounded me (I was 18, but not easily astounded) with their photographs. That was in 1958. Few have been in that league. Gary certainly is. I started galleries on my Flickr page about six months ago. Gary presented a "problem:" there is so much that is so very good that one gallery could have been devoted to him. I've had to be very selective, but I come back every week or so to see if I missed anything. It's a privilege to have hiom following me.

I live in Louvain, an interesting university town in Belgium; good libraries, all kinds of people, even a wood, but encounters like these, with the large mammals and the mysterious loons and so on, are not possible here.
