Ailie Z Killer was born 1985 and raised in Livingston, a notorious newtown in the central belt of Scotland. Her environment was dominated by bleak housing schemes, roundabouts and business parks. She would escape her mundane surroundings by venturing to the local skate park. It was a neucleus of activity, and she would devote many hours there, absorbed behind her camera, capturing images of the wild and vibrant youth scene.

During her time at school, she thrived in subjects such as art, drama and photography. Her love of foreign films was a huge inspiration to her creativity. Her passion for photography stemed from these critical formative experiences.

Currently working and living in Edinburgh, Ailie uses medium format black and white film and transparency to document and describe the subculture of the U.K's skate parks and their influence on art, fashion and music. While she is inspired by contemporary practitioners, such as Ed Templeton and Jason Nocito, she also looks to the genre-defining old guard, by photographers such as Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. Her mix of objective social documentary and confessional, intimate portraiture stand as hymns to her own urban history. Documenting the lives and exploits of her friends have become an integral part of her research, thus her work displays a sensitivity to the current unrivalled anxiety among her peers.

Having studied photography for three years at Telford College, she continued to work commercially and hone her professional skills. She developed a vocabulary of tone and composition which make her work instantly identifiable.

Her work has been published in 'Sidewalk','Kingdom', and 'Maddogs' magazines and she has also received commissioned work for Route One skate shop catalogues. She also has a residency with 'Muckle Sandwich' a quirky fan zine in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
