Bio:

J. Adam Huggins (born 1981, Canada) is a photographer who uses his camera as a medium to tell stories to get people involved in the issues that affect us all.

In 2002, Adam moved to India, where he lived and worked until 2006, when he was invited for a one year residency at Fabrica in Italy. At the end of 2006, he returned to the Indian Subcontinent, where he covered assignments for the New York Times.

Adam has worked with numerous publications in addition to The New York Times, which include Der Spiegel, COLORS, ELLE and the International Herald Tribune. His work has also been exhibited around the world in venues such as Centre Pompidou (Paris), La Triennale di Milano (Milan), the Shanghai Art Museum, and Shiodomeitalia Creative Center (Tokyo).

Adam authored the body of work titled “New York Manhole Covers, Forged Barefoot in India”, which drew attention to the extremely hazardous working conditions under which manhole covers for New York and other municipalities throughout the United States are produced in India. The piece called for State legislatures and prompted Con Edison, one of the private utilities companies that purchases these items, to rewrite its international contracts to include safety requirements. He was subsequently awarded a Certificate of Special Merit at the 2007 Human Rights Press Awards in Hong Kong for this body of work.

So far, Adam’s work has taken him into over 20 countries across five continents and he currently resides in New Delhi.
