About David Rivas
Photographer David Rivas is a fine art artist living in Ventura County California for 30 years. After being discharged from the Marines in 1969, Rivas attended design school at the LA Mart and worked in home furnishings and interior design. The use of color and line seen in his photography began during this time. A pivotal point in his art was a series of photography classes at Ventura College. During that course of study he began using the camera to capture the abstract images that is his art. Rivas works as a boiler operator at Arcturus Mfg. in Oxnard where many of his photographs are taken. Finding beauty in this industrial setting is the challenge that makes his art very unique.
He has been a featured artist at Café Des Artistes, The Upstairs Ghost Gallery, The BuenaVentura Gallery, the Bank of America, the HERTZOG WINERY and Accolades Gallery. He regularly exhibits at the BuenaVentura Gallery and the Ventura Artist’s Union Gallery where he was on the board of directors. His work has been published in Art-Life Limited Editions five times; three times as the cover feature. Recently he was selected by the City of Ventura for a public art project consisting of 58 banners featuring three pieces of his artwork to be displayed for 18 months in the Downtown Cultural District, the Ventura Harbor District and the beachfront. Currently he has an exhibit at Ventura’s CRC GALLERY sharing the space with Jonathan Winters. Besides the 20 pieces at the CRC GALLERY Rivas 11 pieces at the Ventura PD Gallery till November 30. His work was used to decorate the lounge at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ventura for their publicity promotions. He was also chosen to be one of the artists featured at the Ventura 2007 Music Festival.
About The Art
The artwork uses the abstract image to evoke a sense of wonder and mystery, engaging the viewer with an imaginary space of their own creation.
ABOUT THE PROCESS
All my images are real things captured on film using my Nikon fm3a film camera. I make the enlargements myself in a traditional darkroom using light sensitive paper and emulsion chemicals. The resulting prints are called Chromogenic photographs.
