I started taking pictures when I was about 8 years old with a Kodak Instamatic 126 camera. A lot of those pictures remained undeveloped in the cartridge for years as my parents were bad about getting them developed. (My mom solved this with my dad by getting him a Polaroid Land camera for their anniversary.) I was always interested in photography but I never had anyone to show me how to be better at it. Everything was trial and error.

 

When I was 17 my uncle gave me my first SLR, an old (older than me) Honeywell Pentax H1a and a 55mm screw mount lens. I used this for awhile but there was no meter to the camera and it was frustrating trying to get the right exposure. Eventually I put it up on a shelf and moved on with other things in my life. I would take the occasional snapshot with a disposable camera but never any serious photography.

 

In 2001 I got my first digital camera and the instant feedback I got from that re-ignited my interest in photography. Since then I've upgraded through several digital cameras and right now my primary camera is an Olympus E-510.

 

In the summer of 2008 I took a trip to New York and while there I purchased a Holga 135 "toy" camera which has gotten me back into film photography as well. Since then I've broken out the old Honeywell Pentax H1a again for an occasional shoot and I've picked up several other film cameras either for free or for just a few dollars. My favorite so far is an Olympus Trip 35. If you come across one of these cameras buy it and run a couple of rolls of film through it. You'll be amazed at how good such a simple point and shoot camera can be.
