"You were there. I was there. You had a guitar, I had a camera. Listen to my pictures..."
I have taken photographs my whole life. The camera was never off-limits to me, no matter what age... Whether it was one of those moments where my mom encouraged me to use up the remainder of a roll so she could get them developed or Christmas of my 10th year... When I received my first 35 mm camera as a present.... I remember taking photography a bit more serious than others who surround me...
So when I became involved in my local punk-rock scene (circa 1990) and began reading publications making it to my eyes, like SLUG & LETTUCE, MASS REVOLT, FLIPSIDE and MAXIMUM ROCK & ROLL, I became enthralled in the many possibilities of published photography.
In high school my interest of photography led me to take a class to learn about photography, but spent much of my time trying not to be kicked out of the class by a teacher who didn't want me in her class (Mrs. Fenin, Fairfield High School 1990-91) because she said i didn't have the proper credentials to take her class. But as it would turn out, I remained in her class after the injunction of a counselor.... So, after fighting to be in a class with a teacher who didn't like me, nor want me, I would do the only thing a angry high school guy would do. Ultimately, I would intentionally fail her class. of course, AFTER her varied failed attempts to eject me, to prove a point. Years later I would see her in a local grocery store and REMIND her of me taking her class... and how photography has remained an integral part of my person DESPITE her attempts to ruin it. Surprisingly enough, she didn't remember me.
Despite various attempts, I didn't get fully involved into the DIY zine scene until 1996, when I re-formed an older idea into what would become Cincinnati, Ohio’s most hated “un-zine”, THE NEUS SUBJEX. Further letting myself down, around 1998 I took a credit card and went and bought myself a Minolta OtSi “Maxxum” that opened up many more possibilities for my picture taking and publishing within the scope of THE NEUS SUBJEX... And I snapped away... and away... and away... In just a few years I got a reputation for snapping way to many pictures at any given moment, because I was always waiting for that “special” moment.
In 2000-2001 I formed a photo-supplemental to The Neus Subjex that I named after Don Rickles character in Beach Blanket Bingo... called THE BIG DROP. I featured some select snaps of THE STROKES, CROATAN, CRIMSON SWEET and a few more before abandoning the project. I used my minimal knowledge of photography to set up sessions with several local Cincinnati bands who were releasing CD’s to take a few snaps of them for their projects. Sometimes trading soda-pop, lunch and/or beer and paying for any developing for a days worth of my work, these bands include GOATSCREW, DRIVER and MARK CHAPMANS .38 CALIBER to name a few.
In Winter/ early Spring of 2006 I purchased my first digital camera, opening up more possibilities within THE NEUS SUBJEX as well as, possibilities of stand-alone art shows. I teamed up with a friend named Andy Brightone fro a photo-exhibit at BUGHOUSE VIDEO in Cincinnati, Ohio called (Poloarized) Cinematography and Dialogue [Bar-Bee-Qued]. I found one of those ‘perfect moments’ at a show for the newly formed Cincinnati band THE BUFFALO KILLERS who used my photography on their debut CD.
In December of 2006 I revived THE BIG DROP into a flickr pro account which you have just now discovered.
Tread lightly mien friend.
