The Ann Arbor Film Festival is the longest-running independent and experimental film festival in North America. Founded in 1963, the AAFF was independent before "independent film," serving as a critical forum for filmmakers to show their creative work outside of the studio film industry. Today the festival continues its strongly independent spirit as a premier showcase for bold, visionary, experimental and high-caliber films. In 2019, AAFF was ranked No. 1 film festival in North America in the USA Today Readers' Choice Travel Awards contest.

The 58th festival takes place March 24 – 29, 2020, in downtown Ann Arbor. The 57th festival showcased approximately 143 artist-made films from around the world. The AAFF receives about 3,000 film submissions from more than 100 countries. In 2019, the festival awarded approximately $22,500 to 36 filmmakers, providing direct support to talented and independent artists. Since its inception, the AAFF has provided support and recognition for the early works of thousands of influential filmmakers and artists, including Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Kenneth Anger, Gus Van Sant, Barbara Hammer, George Lucas, Agnes Varda, Vin Diesel, and Devo.

Each year the AAFF presents a Traveling Tour of award-winning and favorite short films in more than 30 cities in the U.S. and abroad, providing additional income and exposure to participating filmmakers. For details on booking a tour stop, please visit: www.aafilmfest.org/tour-1.

In Fall 2008, the AAFF released its first DVD collection, "Time Pieces," with 10 of the best short films from the 46th festival. Twelve volumes are now available, including our recently released 10-Pack. Individual DVDs and the 10-pack collection are available for purchase at aafilmfest.org/store-1.

The AAFF also serves as one of a handful of qualifying festivals in the U.S. for the Annual Academy Awards short film category.
