I have been interested in railways since I was a little boy and am old enough to just about remember the last of the steam engines in action, mainly shunting at Barry in South Wales. I have a keen interest in photography, but it is only now, having spent many years overseas with my career as a geologist and with recent work commitments, that I have started photographing railways. I am keen on capturing railway landscapes, which is enormously challenging given the lottery of freight train availability and, of course, our weather. But, it's immensely satisfying when you achieve a decent shot, which often entails meticulous planning. I am also interested to capture/document those features that give the railways character, in particular, semaphore signals and signal boxes, which sadly are being phased out.
